Turn off the breaker
Find the breaker for that outlet and flip it off. Confirm with a non-contact voltage tester at the outlet.
Remove the cover and outlet
Unscrew the cover plate. Unscrew the outlet from the box and pull it out gently.
Photograph the wiring
Before disconnecting anything, take a clear photo of how wires are attached. This is your insurance.
Transfer wires to the new outlet
Black (hot) to brass screw, white (neutral) to silver screw, bare/green (ground) to green screw.
Mount, cover, and test
Screw the outlet back in, reattach the cover, restore power, test with a plug-in tester.
