Install a Low-Flow Toilet

โฑ๏ธ3โ€“4 hrs๐Ÿ’ฐ$150โ€“400๐ŸŸขIntermediateโญ4.5 (178 reviews)

A new 1.28-gallon-per-flush toilet can save 20,000 gallons and $200+ a year. Swap in half a day.

Shut off water and drain the old toilet

Close the shutoff valve, flush to empty the tank, then sponge out remaining water. Remove the supply line.

Unbolt and remove the old toilet

Pry off the bolt caps at the base, unscrew the nuts, and rock the toilet side to side to break the wax seal. Lift straight up โ€” it weighs 60โ€“80 lbs.

Scrape off the old wax ring

Use a putty knife to remove every bit of old wax from the flange. Stuff a rag in the drain temporarily so sewer gas doesn't come up.

Set a new wax ring

Place the wax ring on the flange (not on the toilet). Remove the rag. Lower the new toilet over the flange bolts and press down evenly.

Tighten slowly and evenly

Alternate between the two flange nuts, snugging each a half-turn at a time. Stop when the toilet doesn't rock โ€” overtightening cracks the porcelain.

Connect water and test

Attach the supply line, turn on the water, flush several times, and check for leaks at the base and the tank-to-bowl connection.
