Hang a Heavy Mirror Securely

⏱️30 min💰$10–30🟢Beginner4.8 (245 reviews)

Most dropped mirrors land on sheetrock screws with no stud behind them. Do this right and it'll hang for decades.

Weigh the mirror

Under 20 lbs: drywall anchors are fine. 20–50 lbs: one stud minimum. Over 50 lbs: two studs required. A bathroom stand-on scale works for estimation.

Find studs

Use a stud finder along the wall where you want the mirror. Mark stud centers with painter's tape at the height you'll hang.

Choose the right hardware

Into studs: #10 x 2.5" wood screws. Into drywall only: toggle bolts rated for the weight (never hollow plastic anchors on anything over 15 lbs).

Mark the hanger positions

Measure between the mirror's hanging points. Transfer those distances to the wall, keeping level. A piece of painter's tape with pencil marks acts as a template.

Drill and install

Drill pilot holes (smaller than your screw). Drive screws until 1/4" protrudes. Lift mirror onto the screws.

Level it

Use a bubble level across the top. If off, slightly adjust one hanger or use a shim.
