Open the tank
Remove the lid and look inside. The flapper, float, or fill valve is usually the culprit.
Check the flapper
Push down on the flapper. If the running stops, the flapper needs replacing.
Replace the flapper
Unhook the old flapper from the overflow tube ears and snap on the new one.
Adjust the float
The water level should be 1" below the overflow tube. Bend or adjust the float arm.
